Original
Story
First
published in 1972 by Kodansha, the original story has been told through approximately
1050 pages. The main theme may seem simple : a single human hero takes host
into the body of a demon and fights for the survival of humanity. Violence
and extreme scenes only serve one purpose : a fight for peace and the abolishment
of hatred, a way of repulsing the demon sleeping inside each of us.
Devilman is one of the most popular manga hero in Japan. The manga volumes
are regularly reprinted.
All 5 volumes of Devilman's manga (pocket version) are now available translated
in French, published by Dynamic Visions. The reading way has been inverted
to fit western standards (this implies all pages (drawings) have been inverted).
Verotik has published in the U.S.A. various Devilman pages in the comic book
format, but I do not have for the moment precise information on these past
releases.
Here is a shot of the japanese covers (in 3 volumes) and the five french covers.

This lone issue must be read after Akira acquires the control of Devilman. Ryo and Akira travel through time in order to eradicate demons that could have changed history. Various periods are visited : from pre-WWII to ancient Greece, middle ages in France meeting Joan of Arc, far-west America, renaissance.
These episodes are not crucial to the plot and can be taken more lightly than the main story arc.
Various versions of the book have been released with some including side stories staging minor characters (the other schoolboys for instance).
Neo
Devilman
Started
in 1999, this series features spin-offs, sequels and addition to the original
story. The stories are handled by various artists, including Go Nagai. The
art is both in black
and white and in color (mostly b&w). The printing is of really high quality.
The text is of course in japanese only. Each part features a different drawing
style. All pay tribute to the myth. Here is a list of the artists involved
and the chapter titles.

Amon:
The Dark Side of The Devilman
Five volumes of this series have been published
so far. The story is written by Go Nagai and pencilled by Yu Kinutani. The
artwork is absolutely stunning.
Metallic ink has been used for the dust jacket, so this is the book cover scans for issues #1 to #4.
Devilman
No Sekai - World of Devilman Illustrations -
Numerous
artbooks publishing Go Nagai's illustrations have been released, but this
is the one that gathers his best Devilman paintings. 74 full page color
drawings are presented in this hardback book: the Devilman manga covers,
magazines, lp & video covers with precise information (japanese text
only). Most pieces give life to the manga version of the story, only a few
page shows the TV version of the protagonists. As a bonus, a metallic ink
print of Devilman fighting Silene is attached at the beginning of the book
(which cannot be removed without damaging it). Go Nagai is interviewed at
the end of the book and the major related products released at that time
(1998) are presented.
If you want to have a look at your favourite classic Devilman character in
color, get a copy of this book !.
Screaming Mad George's Lady Devilman - New -
Not an original work by Go Nagai, but one warmly recommend by himself : a collection of computer enhanced make-up photography by the make-up artist master known as Screaming Mad George, long friend of Go Nagai.
Presented as a text-less photo story it stages Devilman Lady in her tormeted travel from her human life to the one of a demonic heroine...

Manga
Video has released in the U.S.A. and in France the 2 OAVs (Original Animation
Video) realized in 1987 and 1990. Entitled "Devilman Tanjôhen"
(The Birth) and "Devilman Yocho Shivenuhen" (Witchbird), they
follow the original storyline and feature some context changes. Unfortunately
the story stops at the end of Devilman and Silene's fight.
The animation is really good (OAV standards) and the production is really
dynamic. I sincerely recommend watching them.
The American version does not feature the original audio track in Japanese
contrary to the French version which has a double language option (French/Japanese
with removable subtitles).
The DVD cover could have been better, but here is a scan of it anyway (French version. the U.S. version is quite similar).
Take a look at the character cast here !
A second animated OAV has been released some years later entitled "Amon - Apocalypse of Devilman". This one is particularly interesting thanks to its very dynamic combats between Devilman & a monstruous Amon. The story does not take any element from the original manga, but the character design is signed by someone who has entered the Devilman pantheon of artists : Nirasawa...
Here is a look at the character cast as they appear in the video -New-
RELATED MANGA
Maô
Dante
This 2-book
storyline is an earlier work (compared with the original Devilman story) by
Go Nagai. The story begins with a man possessed by visions of an elder demon
calling to be released.
Based
in the contemporary world, the story has obviously been used as a groundwork
for Devilman. The story is dark and cruel and reminds immediately of the mood
set in Devilman. The anti-hero has some similarities to a Kaiju for being
gigantic and rampaging cities.
In the second volume, a demon with Zannin's likeness appears, the very man
(named Ryo) who set Dante free endorses the form of horned and bat-winged
human, names like Zenon are being used for the dark forces... I let you make
your own conclusions !
The story spreads on approximately 650 pages.
It has been adapted as a TV series in late 2002 (run of 13 episodes).
